How to update the firmware. Download calibration upgrade tool and firmware. Enter www.zhiyun-tech.com, Enter CRANE 2 product page and click download. Download ZHIYUN USB Driver, Callibration Upgrade Tool and Firmware. Download driver. Unzip ZHIYUN USB Driver file and download ZYCDCSetup.exe. Open calibration upgrade tool.
Firmware download:
1. Enter Zhiyun official website: www.zhiyun-tech.com
2. Choose Download among Support tab, select tools according to your PC type. Zhiyun has provided Apple’s MAC system driver and windows driver for downloading.
3. Download zhiyun usb driver (mac osx), tools (mac osx), and firmware for Crane.
4. Before installation, choose system preferences, security&privacy, click unlock button, choose anywhere in tab of allowing apps downloaded from these places, make sure to allow from anywhere.
5. Unzip files downloaded just now, to get three files. Install SiLabsUSBDriverDisk, finish installation according to prompts.
Crane preparation before update:
1. Connect the cable to the usb port of Crane and computer.
2. Press the power button to start Crane. After it starts normally, press the joystick for three seconds to get Crane into standby mode. Put Crane on a flat platform.
Update operation:
1. Open the ZhiyunGimbalTools in the folder downloaded. Click twice to open it.
2. Start ZhiyunGimbalTools, open the window, product name will be automatically recognized as Crane. Choose firmware update.
3. Choose downloaded Crane Firmware en V1.50 for browse.
4. Click update. If update succeeds there would be prompt, and if fails related prompt also appear.
4. After finishing update please restart the gimbal. Then you could use it.

Firmware version vs ZY Play App version
First, please do not confuse the firmware version with the app version. The firmware is the internal software inside the Zhiyun Smooth 4 electronics. The ZY Play app runs on your phone and has its own version update.
How to check Zhiyun Smooth 4 firmware version?
- Connect the ZY Play app to Zhiyun Smooth 4 via Bluetooth.
- Press the Menu button on the Zhiyun Smooth 4.
- Goto Settings > General > OTA version.
The OTA version is your latest firmware.
What is the latest firmware?
According to the official Zhiyun website, the latest version of the firmware is 1.77 as of January 2020.
What’s new in Firmware version 1.77?
According to various sources, here is what’s new… and other version upgrades.

– Fixed the zoom & focus failure.

– Optimize pan axis drift.

– Optimize motor protection to avoid motor overheat.
– Optimize Bluetooth communicating.

It seems version 1.77 only fixes the pan and focus failure. I didn’t notice any failure in version 1.76. Pan and Focus are fine on my Smooth 4.
Should I update the firmware?
If you use an Android phone, I strongly suggest NOT to update. You might face more problems, as I have read.
If you like adventure… then do it at your own risk.
I REPEAT… ATTENTION ANDROID USERS… DO NOT UPDATE!!!
Android Issue SOLVED!!!
SOLVED… Update – January 4, 2020: ZY Play app on my Android phone cannot connect to the Smooth 4 SOLVED! Here’s how… (1) I turned off my iPhone Bluetooth, (2) Then I powered off and on my Samsung Galaxy S10, (3) Connect with ZY Play app again and it works!!!
So, Android users, it is safe to upgrade to firmware version 1.77… at least for my Samsung Galaxy S10.
